10 Netflix Original Movies That Are Better Than You Remember
7. The Outsider
Jared Leto has quickly become a controversial name in Hollywood after his role in Suicide Squad as The Joker was incredibly divisive among fans and critics. Some loved him, some hated him. But with The Outsider, we hoped that he'd be able to redeem himself with a meaty character driven thriller rather than a blockbuster. Unfortunately, many critics hated the Yakuza drama, and it currently has a one star rating on Rotten Tomatoes... Ouch.
We're not ignoring the obvious, it's a white saviour movie through and through. It sees an American ex-soldier turn into a hardened mobster and save the clan he's become embroiled with after being released from a prison in Osaka. It also has some problems with pacing as well as some unjustified story moments that do feel like the movie is simply finding something for Leto to do.
But Leto's performance is a dedicated one, and while his intense brooding can get a little too much occasionally, his journey moving through the clan is genuinely interesting. Admittedly, the mob thriller doesn't have much originality. But as a two hour tale of violence, Yakuza politics with a splash of romance, it's a good way of killing time if you're travelling somewhere.
