10 Netflix Original Movies That Are Better Than You Remember
5. Spectral
Who doesn't love a good science fiction thriller that uses an otherworldly horror to give us a parable about humanity meddling with forces they shouldn't? Because that's Spectral.
It follows a team of U.S. soldiers who are dispatched to Moldova to investigate a horde of ethereal creatures that seem to have taken over the capital city during the United States' ongoing war with Moldova. These apparitions are able to kill people instantly, freeze people to death and even phase through walls. Is this a supernatural force or something a little closer to home?
In the run-up to the release, Spectral was described as a supernatural version of Black Hawk Down. And that summary isn't far off the truth. While the overall spectacle of the film doesn't come close to Ridley Scott's war-thriller, Spectral does deliver a genuinely captivating idea. It attempts to use real-world science mixed with some Frankenstein-like methods to create the monsters of the movie. But weirdly, Spectral feels like all the cinematic cut scenes from a video game combined into a single movie.
It does feel like there should be scenes every so often of button mashing or stealth missions. For an original movie, it would probably make a very good video game. It's not perfect, but it's a good supernatural thriller.
