10 Netflix Original Movies That Are Better Than You Remember
4. Mute
Mute is written and directed by Duncan Jones (of Moon fame) and follows Leo, a bartender in a futuristic cyber-punk/dystopian Berlin as he tries to find his missing girlfriend.
Unfortunately, as he does so, he uncovers secrets from the Berlin underworld while coming across some very questionable characters. Unfortunately for Mute, the performance by Alexander Skarsgård is a little boring. There isn't much passion in his face, and his inability to speak for most of the film really hinders his character development.
The real star of the show here, is Paul Rudd. He's a violent surgeon who's paid to torture people with his best friend for a group of gangsters. Well, when times are hard right? His enigmatic and over the top performance quickly overrides Skarsgård. We know that Leo's character development needs him to be mute so he can go through this crucible without complaining and being unable to express his true emotions. But Skarsgård's stoic performance comes across as wooden because of it.
Luckily, the world these characters inhabit is incredibly fascinating, and yes - it has a 15% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but that is largely down to a somewhat lukewarm ending and poor character decisions. But Mute is a visual treat.
