Death Note is the live action adaptation of the Manga of the same name which sees a mythical book fall into the possession of Light Turner, a teenager who discovers that by writing a person's name in the book it can kill them in very specific ways. He becomes something of a vigilante, ridding the world of criminals and anyone that gets in his way. Did we mention that he has a Japanese God of Death called Ryuk following his every move?

The biggest problem with Death Note that was widely criticised by most critics and fans of the Manga, is the fact that this is yet another example of Hollywood whitewashing a Japanese property. This is a heavily Americanised version of the story that several Japanese live action movies had already achieved.

But the redeeming factor of Death Note that should be recognised? Willem Dafoe. He voices the God of Death, Ryuk and his performance is hauntingly brilliant. The special effects that bring Ryuk to life are quite impressive, and he certainly looks creepy. You wouldn't want him crouching at the end of your bed every night that's for sure. And Dafoe bring his gravelly, creepy A-game to voicing the ambiguously dangerous character.
