10 New Details You Need To Know About James Gunn's The Suicide Squad

Here's where things get complicated; while this movie will feature characters from the first instalment, it's meant to serve as a reboot for the franchise. In fact, producer Peter Safran has confirmed that, "we don’t call it Suicide Squad 2 ‘cause it’s a total reboot, so it’s 'The Suicide Squad' and I think people should be extremely excited about it."

Gunn himself has refused to comment either way, but it's hard to believe these actors are going to be playing completely different versions of characters we first met back in 2016. After all, Birds of Prey didn't fully reboot Harley Quinn and still referenced the events of Suicide Squad (albeit very loosely), so chances are this movie will be a bit of both.

Moving forward, the DC Extended Universe is clearly becoming standalone in nature, and that means there's no longer really a need to tie all these films together. That's explains why Birds of Prey didn't set up The Suicide Squad, and why Gunn is now picking and choosing what he wants from the team's last adventure without fretting about continuity.
