10 New Year's Resolutions For 2013's Biggest Movie Characters

6. To Lay Off The Booze - Tony Stark (Iron Man 3)

When one of your central character traits is 'drinks heavily', there's a good chance that you may have yourself a little problem. The troubled genius is a trope that is done to death and I can appreciate the easiest way to portray these issues is to have a glass of scotch permanently glued to one of the character's hands. This doesn't mean that multi-billionaire Tony Stark should waste all of his talent by drinking himself silly. He can invent anything he wants except a cure for alcoholism, you'd think if he was that committed he'd at least have fashioned himself a bionic liver. As he hasn't done this yet I'll assume it can't be done and return to my original point that he should seriously consider some sort of S.H.I.E.L.D. rehab course. I understand that having to spend all of your time with Gwyneth Paltrow might set you off down the very slippery slope to Booze Avenue, but when the world depends on you for its safety it's probably not such a good idea. In Iron Man II we saw what a destructive combination drinks and a robo-suit can be, this can't be allowed to happen on a larger scale. Just think what a sober Tony Stark could accomplish, the mind boggles €“ hopefully there will be a dry January 2014 for Iron Man.
