10 Niggling Worries Over Marvel's Next 10 Movies
1. Can Anna Boden And Ryan Fleck Handle An Action Flick? - Captain Marvel
The MCU is no stranger to throwing seemingly random directors behind the camera. Remember Kenneth Branagh and Thor? Peyton Reed and Ant-Man? Hell, Jon Favreau seemed like a bizarre choice for Iron Man back in the day, and he was the one who essentially set the template for the MCU as we know it.
Which brings us to Captain Marvel, a film set to be directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the directorial team behind indie hits such as ward drama It's Kind of a Funny Story and gambling flick Mississippi Grind. Not a single blockbuster in sight, though, which begs the question: can they handle the likes of Captain Marvel?
Kevin Feige justified the hiring by citing the duo's previous films, which were essentially character studies. "We want filmmakers that can help us focus on and elevate the character journey so it doesn’t get lost amongst the spectacle," he said. "And there’s going to be a lot of spectacle in the Captain Marvel film."
All well and good, but the proof will be in the pudding... here's hoping it turns out Boden and Fleck have a natural flair with elaborate set-pieces and cosmic explosions to match their skill for nuanced character development.
