10 Non-Horror Movies That Are HORRIFYING

And finally we have what is by far the most niche film on this list, but one you absolutely, positively need to watch.

Craig Zobel's controversial thriller Compliance is based on a real-life incident in which a scam artist (Pat Healy) called up a fast food restaurant while posing as a police officer and persuaded the restaurant's manager (an Oscar-worthy Ann Dowd) to carry out unlawful searches on an innocent employee (Dreama Walker).

There are few greater cinematic indictments of humanity's unwillingness to question authority, and though Compliance's increasingly queasy, squirm-inducing events might seem unrealistic to some, it's worth reiterating that said events are closely inspired by a real incident.

To see human rights violated in such gross ways for a single person's sick amusement makes Compliance a most unexpected of horror films, even if the mechanics through which this abuse happened feel all too familiar in a world where "truth" is becoming ever-tougher to discern.
