10 Obscure Actors Who Deserve More Respect

9. Brendan Gleeson

You've Seen Him In: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) Brusque Irishman Brendan Gleeson has made a career of ambling into movies, giving gruff, understated performances, and ambling right back out. Most famous stateside for his role as Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody in the Harry Potter films, Gleeson has been racking up credits since 1989, and only has a Golden Globe nomination to his name, for 2008's In Bruges, in which he starred alongside Colin Farrell as a hit man on holiday. Before that, he'd made a name for himself in fare like Braveheart, 28 Days Later, Gangs of New York, and Troy; since then, the deceptively sensitive and broad-shouldered actor has received some acclaim for playing Winston Churchill on the BBC's Into the Storm, and received a surprising amount of (by necessity faceless) voice work. The Role He Needs: Gleeson has been gifted with a hulking physique and a timeless face; cast him as a boxer in the 1920s struggling with family issues and addiction. He's a soulful performer who brings a quiet gravitas to everything he does, and has a talent for layering sadness under every note.
