10 Most Obvious Oscar-Bait Movies Coming In 2014

9. Jersey Boys

It's an adaptation of the Tony Award-winning hit musical of the same name, and it's being directed by Clint Eastwood: enough said. Though releasing the film during the summer is a curious move for what is on the face of it a pure prestige pic, Jersey Boys would have to make a lot of mistakes not to end up with at least some crafts nominations (costume design?) at the 2015 Academy Awards. Sure, the cast consists largely of up-and-coming actors, but working in its favour is the appearance of Christopher Walken as mobster Gyp DeCarlo, a role that could very well earn him a Best Supporting Actor nomination. Eastwood may seem like an odd choice to direct a musical, but the guy has won two Best Director Oscars, so I think he knows what he's doing. Though this creates high expectations, it's also lofty material, and musicals adapted from Tony-winning shows are almost always Oscar bait in some form or another, whether they like it or not.
