10 Most Obvious Oscar-Bait Movies Coming In 2014

6. Into The Woods

Stephen Sondheim's classic musical is being adapted to the screen by director Rob "Chicago" Marshall, who is no doubt looking to rebound from the failed musical experiment Nine and the abysmal cash-grab that was Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Marshall is well-suited to this material, having earned a Best Director nomination for his work on Chicago, and the benefit of highly popular subject matter will almost ensure he can't screw it up too badly. And just look at that cast: Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Anna Kendrick, Emily Blunt, and so on. It's going to be the populist, silly Oscar nominee that probably ends up with a Best Picture nomination despite everyone knowing it won't win. It'll easily clear nominations for the technicals and the costume and makeup awards, but as with most of Baz Luhrmann's work, Marshall's pretty superficial so it probably won't win a whole lot.
