Fans of Argentinian director Gaspar Noé will know that he doesn’t do things by the book, which is why when he decided to make a horror movie in 2018, it was met with a mixture of anticipation and dread.

Climax is about a troupe of French dancers who, after accidentally ingesting psychoactive drugs, find themselves combating their own deteriorating minds to survive the night. Along for the ride is Tito, the young son of troupe leader Emmanuelle (Claude Gajan Maull), who accidentally drinks the spiked sangria responsible for this whole mess.

In order to protect her boy from any harm, Emmanuelle locks him in a room. Unfortunately, this just so happens to be the room containing all of the building’s electrics. When the lights go out later in the film, it is revealed that this happened because, in his drug-induced state, Tito accidentally tripped the power supply, electrocuting himself in the process.

Kids dying in horror movies is always a tough one, but this is even worse because Emmanuelle, Tito’s own mother, was responsible. Her grief becomes overwhelming and she eventually takes her own life in the same room that killed her son.
