“Wait, The Emperor is still alive?!?!”

That was the response from most people at hearing that undeniably familiar cackle at the end of the first trailer for Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker. Despite Star Wars lore informing us that this sinister Sith was thrown to his death at the conclusion of Return of the Jedi, it appears as if that death wasn’t quite as permanent as we’d been led to believe.

Of course, in the Star Wars Expanded Universe novels that are now deemed non-canon, there was the odd pseudo resurrection or two of Darth Sidious. In the mainstream continuity that’s now in place, however, the evil presence of one of the most powerful Sith Lords in history has been dormant in the timeline of Star Wars for 30 years - that being the narrative time between Return of the Jedi and this latest trilogy.

The Emperor was 86 years of age at the time of his “death” in Return of the Jedi, which would in turn make Sidious 116 by this point in Star Wars lore.
