10 Oscar-Worthy Recent Performances The Academy Will Ignore

6. Zac Efron - Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil And Vile

When Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile debuted on Netflix, people were quite disappointed.

A movie about one of the most murderous killers in the United States was enticing, but watching his court proceedings were not. Extremely Wicked did little the Netflix four-part-documentary couldn’t (and interestingly enough, both were directed by Joe Berlinger), but one positive was a surprisingly remarkable take on Ted Bundy by pretty boy, Zac Efron.

Efron has never had a role as titillating as this, and when given the opportunity he delivered. Anyone who watched the docu-series, Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes, knows just how closely Efron copied Bundy’s personality and mannerisms.

Efron could have gone a more drastic route, too - something akin to Christian Bale in American Psycho, but that’s not who Bundy was. Efron’s mature enough as an actor now to know when to go over the top and when to be reserved, and that development showed.

A Netflix film has to be a real showstopper to make waves at the Academy, and thus far only two films and three performances have.

Had the film played better it may be a different story, but sadly, Efron will have to wait and prove himself once more before he gets to hold that little gold statue.
