10 Out Of This World Sci-Fi Horror Movie Deaths

7. Caplan Explodes - Cloverfield

Lizzy Caplan Cloverfield
Paramount Pictures

Poor Lizzy Caplan.

The actor was fairly famous by the time 2008's enigmatic found footage horror Cloverfield was released, and after supporting roles in the likes of 2004's cult comedy hit Mean Girls it was fair to expect she would get a fairly choice role in this sci-fi film.

Depicting the destruction of New York by the titular beast, the film took its time to get going and establishes a nice rapport between Caplan's character and its ostensible hero before the monster arrives and all Hell breaks loose. It's a nice enough subplot that viewers really want to see the pair make it out alive... Which makes her explosive exit all the more unforgettably upsetting.

Bitten by one of the creature's parasitic hanger-ons during a dash across Manhattan, our until-now heroine begins bleeding from the eyes (never a good sign), before a doctor ushers her into a tent, the audience hears that infamous proclamation "I don't feel too good..."

And that's when the film's apparent protagonist, fortunately shielded a curtain, promptly explodes.

And now the audience knows for sure that no one is safe.

It's a rare sci-fi horror death which is made all the more unsettling by taking place offscreen, as the sight of Caplan actually exploding could easily have looked unintentionally goofy where her silhouette's contortions are deeply creepy even before the sickening crunch.
