Western drama The Misfits was the final film for two legendary actors from Hollywood's Classical Era. Whilst director John Huston's film was a box office bomb upon release, The Misfits has since been recognised as one of the greatest dramas of the Western genre by critics, with Monroe and Gable's acting careers ending on a high note.

Together the actors, joined by further Hollywood royalty in Eli Wallach and Montgomery Clift, team up to capture wild horses. The film's screenplay was written by Monroe's then husband and famous playwright Arthur Miller and many consider the story to be at least partially inspired by their turbulent relationship.

Playing the role of Roslyn, the film was an example of Monroe's increased desire to work on more serious film projects. The actress had already proven her dramatic acting credentials in Don't Bother To Knock (1952) and Niagara (1953). However her opportunities were often limited to screwball comedies, due to the conditions of studio control that plagued the careers of so many actors during cinema's golden era.

Meanwhile Gable had been slowly winding down his illustrious career leading up to his final performance, but this didn't stop the actor from putting in one final great performance, opposite Hollywood's most iconic blonde bombshell.
