9. Evan Rachel Wood - Across The Universe
Julie Taymors jukebox musical, Across the Universe, is an ambitious film that tries to take all the themes of Beatles music into one coherent film which isnt always successful. But, one of the best castings of the film is the casting of Evan Rachel Wood as, obviously, Lucy. The reason why she is so successful has a lot to do with her real life persona. On the exterior, Wood looks like the perfect girl next door. But, underneath that virtuous, All-American façade is something darker as evidence by her relationship with someone such as Marilyn Manson. Here she is the embodiment of the disillusioned, middle class teenager of the suburbs in the 1960s who finds a family in the politically aware movements of New York City, Greenwich Village. And Wood breathes into these classic songs new life and soul, at least making it different from the Beatles original. Her phrasing is packed with the proper emotions that brings about the appropriate tone and pathos.
