8. Charles Durning - The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas
Quite an underrated musical from 1982, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is an entertaining romp about what the title says. And to bring even more joy and vitality to a film that is already so vibrant is perhaps the greatest character actor that recently died, Charles Durning as The Governor. Although only given a small amount of screen time, he gives the most memorable music number known as The Sidestep about how he is able to avoid the hard hitting questions with vague answers. This song satirizing how politicians politically avoid controversy is amplified by the gracefulness of Charles Durnings dancing who, for the lack of a better word, was a husky individual. The fun that Charles Durning is obviously having onscreen cannot help but radiate off screen and the Academy agreed as he got an Oscar nomination for his small role.
