It's difficult to accept that a $100-150 million movie starring Johnny Depp, Morgan Freeman, Rebecca Hall, Kate Mara, Cillian Murphy, and Paul Bettany, with Christopher Nolan executive-producing, could come and go so quickly without lingering around in the cultural conversation at all.

Transcendence was released in April 2014 amid considerable hype, due to it being the directorial debut of Oscar-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister, who had built his brand working as the DP on many of Nolan's most popular films (such as The Dark Knight and Inception).

There was a widespread assumption that, as a Nolan protege, Pfister would follow in his acclaimed footsteps, only for Transcendence to be panned by most critics and nab just $103 million worldwide.

Within months of its release, Transcendence had been forgotten among the sea of better-received blockbusters released that summer - Godzilla, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Edge of Tomorrow, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and Guardians of the Galaxy - and is basically a cinematic non-entity today.

Given that Transcendence actually had some interesting ideas and solid performances in spite of its clunky execution, it's shocking how easy it is to forget that it even exists less than a decade later.
