10 Overlooked Horror Slasher Movies That Deserve Your Attention

4. The Clown At Midnight

Something of a lost treasure in the nineties slasher canon, this moody and atmospheric slice-and-dice picture has fallen into obscurity in the years since its release. With DVD and VHS copies becoming increasingly more difficult to source, you'll have your work cut out if you're to track down this elusive little treat.

The film tells the story of high-school student Kate, the daughter of an opera singer who was supposedly murdered by one of her co-stars during a performance of Pagliacci many years previously. Kate is persuaded by her friends to aid in the restoration of the opera house where the murder occurred, thinking it may help her feel closer to her dead mother.

Things soon turn nasty, however, when a figure dressed in a rather creepy harlequin clown outfit begins murdering all of those in attendance, could it be the same man who murdered Kate's mother all those years ago?

It's a relatively low-budget affair, but screen veterans Margot Kidder and Christopher Plummer add a much-needed sense of class to the proceedings and the gloomy theatre setting gives it a very cold and gothic atmosphere that sets it apart from many of its contemporaries.
