10 Overlooked Horror Slasher Movies That Deserve Your Attention

5. Valentine

The Prowler 1981
Warner Bros

Perhaps the finest eighties slasher film to not come out of the eighties, Valentine is a thoroughly nasty and joyfully comfortable trip down memory lane for slasher fans. It's got all the right ingredients but somehow didn't win over audiences and critics on release, many of whom label it as a Scream knock-off.

This assertion couldn't be further from the truth, as Valentine doesn't bear many similarities to Scream, it's more akin to the likes of My Bloody Valentine or the delightfully odd Happy Birthday to Me. Harking back to a simpler time where slasher films didn't have to be meta or self-reflexive, they just needed a solid holiday-based hook to draw people in.

Valentine follows a group of gorgeous ladies who find themselves being stalked and threatened by a mysterious stranger as Valentine's Day draws closer, and the only lead they have to go on is a young boy who they all spurned at a high school dance years ago, one who may still be harbouring a grudge.

Featuring a recognisable cast, a great soundtrack, and a bevy of cruel murder sequences, Valentine really does deserve a second look, even if it's just for that hot-tub scene alone.
