10 Overlooked Positives Of Divisive Upcoming Movies

2. Sam Taylor-Johnson Is Directing - Fifty Shades Of Grey

Why The Film Is Questionable: It's a movie based on a poorly written Twilight fan-fiction. The main selling point is that it features explicit sex, which a mainstream adaptation will unsurprisingly reduce to instead focus on the broad characters. The central duo reportedly have next-to-no chemistry, leading to extensive reshoots. The whole thing is being marketed solely to the same audience as E. L. James' book, with an obnoxious Valentine's Day release already booking. Put simply, nothing about Fifty Shades Of Grey on a fundamental level makes it sound like an entertaining prospect. The Overlooked Positive: Well, except one very important thing - it's directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson. The photographer-cum-director delivered an impressive feature debut with Nowhere Boy in 2009 and while the early days of John Lennon are much more fertile ground for a dramatic film, it's hard not to be a bit curious about her follow-up. That she's chosen of her own volition to tackle Fifty Shades hints that there may be more to this than a lowest common denominator box office clearing.
