10 Overlooked Positives Of Ghostbusters 2
6. The Villains Are A Major Improvement
The first movie was actually pretty weak when it came to presenting compelling villains, as Gozer and Zuul arrived so late in the movie they struggled to make an impact, especially with the small appearances from Slimer and Stay Pufy proving so much more entertaining.
Ghostbusters II actually makes much more effort with its baddies, introducing them early on and returning to them throughout.
Firstly, there's the big bad, Vigo the Carpathian, a sixteenth century tyrant who is trapped inside a painting. He's played by former wrestler and boxer Wilhelm von Homburg, and benefits massively from being voiced by the superbly chilling Max von Sydow. In short, he has a lot of presence, and if that's not enough, he transforms into a grotesque mutation for the final stretch.
Then there's his lackey Janosz, who isn't remotely threatening but retains a sure level of creepiness when he visits Dana's apartment and later snatches her baby. Plus, with sassy lines like "Everything you are doing is bad, I want you to know this" (spoken to one of his students), he's also ludicrously entertaining, and actor Peter MacNicol totally kills the part.
The plot may not be up to much, but the main bad guys have so much more character than those in the original.
