10 Overlooked & Underappreciated 90s Action Movie Flicks
3. Tough and Deadly (1995)
The on-screen partnership of Tae-Bo master Billy Blanks and WWE legend “Rowdy” Roddy Piper was a good one. The chemistry between the two more than makes up for the low budget, straight-to-video feel of the film. Tough and Deadly was their second outing together after Back in Action.
A drug-smuggling case that runs deep into Washington is being investigated by CIA agent, Quicksilver (Blanks). When he gets too close to the truth, he is involved in an incident that leaves him with amnesia. An ex-cop turned private investigator (Piper) is hired to try and piece together the agent’s life before losing his memory, in doing so, they begin to uncover the smuggling ring. Piper and Blanks team up to take on the mob and the corruption within the CIA. This also stars Richard Norton, a regular hand in many low budget action movies in the 90s. Norton’s CV includes entertaining farces such as Rage and Honour and Cyber Tracker.
Roddy Piper stated in an interview that at this point in his acting career he was no longer having fun in the movie world. According to the wrestling icon, After They Live and Hell Comes to Frogtown, acting became more like just another job. Luckily this does not come through in his performance in Tough and Deadly.
