10 Overlooked & Underappreciated 90s Action Movie Flicks

2. Spawn (1997)

Tough And Deadly Roddy Piper
New Line Cinema

This dark comic book movie made over double its budget with a worldwide gross of $87,840,040. Despite this, it was universally panned upon release. Out of the cinema, and after an initial buzz generated upon release for home rental, it faded into the shadows. The Spawn movie became outshined by the animated incarnation of Todd McFarlane’s creation.

Al Simmons (Michael Jai White) is killed by the devious Jason Wynn (Martin Sheen) whilst on a dangerous mission. In Hell, Simmons agrees to becoming a soldier in their army on the condition he can return to the world to see his wife one more time. Back on earth and guided by the disgusting clown, played with gusto by John Leguizamo, a burnt and scarred Simmons - seeing his wife has moved on - decides to go rogue. Our man sets out on a quest for vengeance as Spawn.

The CGI special effects have not dated well, which can be a distraction. The character’s vast and flowing red cape, for example. Spawn has a runtime of just 1 hour and 36 minutes - uncharacteristic for a comic book movie - and has plenty of action. You’re not given any time to get bored with this one.
