Extraterrestrial horror films have a big task ahead of them as the design of your alien can make or break your film. Life, fortunately, manages to nail this aspect with a unique and ever-changing terrifying monster.

A group of astronauts discover the first alien on Mars and are on their way back to a grateful Earth for it to be studied, but it doesn't take long for said martian to turn hostile and wreak havoc on the crew.

The film was labeled as a derivative sci-fi horror before it even came out, with its star-laden cast and big-budget giving it the stigma of a studio lead 'Alien clone'.

Although at first the film appears to be heading in this direction, Life actually manages to go against a lot of genre cliches to deliver a thrilling horror experience.

It's the commitment to the entire film being set in zero gravity allows for some neat camerawork to shine, as well as creative and frightening scenarios to occur that will leave you shivering.

The movie also does not play is safe when it comes to the shocks, as body parts are bent in horrifying angles and blood gushes forth to float around the grisly scenes taking place.

It's a film that is 95 minutes long and does not waste a second, moving along at a swift pace from each startling dilemma to the next as the crew battles to survive with such a smart, powerful foe.
