10 Painfully Underrated Sci-Fi Horror Movies
5. Annihilation (2018)
Modern-day horror films tend to take a much more labored pace and exploit our fears with uncomfortable visuals rather than the jump scare heavy and gore laden shockers at the turn of the millennia.
Annihilation is a fantastic example of creeping psychological horror done beautifully with a terrific plot. It's 6.9/10 IMDB rating and C-grade Cinemascore is frankly a little insulting as despite it being far from a casual viewing experience, it was one of the best films of 2018.
After a mysterious bubble-like dome appears, a scientist, played by Natalie Portman, and a team of soldiers head into it to find out what happened to the first people foolish enough to venture inside.
What follows is a curious mystery that takes you on a weird trip with gorgeous imagery, as well as stomach-turning body horror, and plenty of room for interpretation to allow internet forums to burst at the seams with theories.
A scene with a screaming undead bear will haunt your nightmares for weeks, and that is only a small slice of the strangeness that unfolds within its runtime. There's also a lot of biological science and alien technological babble to firmly root it into the sci-fi genre.
Annihilation is a bold film that takes a lot of risks, and they almost always pay off. It really didn't deserve the bombing it took at the box-office upon release.
Go in with the right mindset to take it all in, and you'll assuredly leave hungering for more like it.
