10 Painfully Underrated Sci-Fi Horror Movies
4. Pitch Black (2000)
A spaceship crash lands on an alien planet and the clock is ticking as within a few days the world will plunge into eternal darkness.
The catch is there's a serial killer on the loose, a wacky band of survivors that don't get along and large, blind, blood-hungry beasts hunting everyone which makes for one hell of an entertaining ride as they all clash.
Vin Diesel steals the show as one of the coolest characters of the 2000's Richard B. Riddick, the definition of an anti-hero with one of the deepest growls you ever hear a man utter, and a seemingly inhuman ability to escape any scenario.
Other characters offer just enough personality to stand out themselves, to the point the film actually earns its pretty emotional ending.
The villainous creatures are unique, as well as absolutely terrifying, coming in the hundreds and dealing out some horrifically gory kills. Riddick himself also keeps things on a knife-edge as the wild card in amongst our good-hearted heroes, and there's a plethora of twists and turns to keep things exciting as you wonder what will happen next.
The film received mixed reviews, and the future failures of the franchise have tainted its legacy as simply 'That first film with Riddick', but Pitch Black offers a unique visual style, some great action and plenty of creatively fear-inducing scenes to please any filmgoer.
