10 Painfully Underrated Sci-Fi Horror Movies

3. Predator 2 (1990)

Predator 2 gets a bad reputation but is mostly just a misunderstood horror sequel.

When compared to the classic first Predator film, it might not be as well-paced and suffers from the loss of Arnold Schwarzenegger and his band of jingoistic meatheads, but it's still a thrilling hunt with cold, gritty visuals and an anxiety-ridden atmosphere.

It's unfairly seen as inferior to the first due to it differing so much from the established formula, but that’s also what makes it worth watching.

A lot more intelligent than its predecessor, Predator 2 takes the fight to a concrete jungle and in much more risky territory for the titular monster. There's a ton of terrific set pieces to keep your interest too, such as a brutal slaughterhouse showdown and a massacre on a speeding train.

This is not a simple retread of the same plot and tosses what audiences had gotten used to in the first on its head. It also deserves praise for doing what any good sequel does and expands its lore where we gain more insight into the predator’s world and ideology.

The final act is a crowd-pleasing chase in which the roles between predator and prey get reversed, and the franchise's universe is grown immensely in the climax with, impressively, barely any spoken dialogue.

If you wrote this one-off due to its loss of AH-NODE, definitely give it a second chance to see some scenes of viscous inventiveness and grainy action-horror.
