10 Party Animal Horror Movies
6. The Tripper
It's long been noted that there would seem to be a curiously conservative morality underlying the slasher genre. These are movies that are filled with loose-living young people indulging in drugs, alcohol and sexual relations out of wedlock - all the things that God-fearing straight society frowns upon. And so, in comes a masked killer to bring down the wrath of God on these shameless sinners.
Given the first wave of slasher movies emerged during the first term of US President Ronald Reagan, there was a definite political undertone to the subgenre. Scream actor David Arquette would bring this subtext right to the surface with his directorial debut The Tripper, which sees a killer dressed as Reagan himself wreak bloody havoc at a drug-addled hippy festival. Sadly, the film doesn't quite do justice to this eyebrow-raising premise, but its heart is in the right place.
Our festival-goers (Jaime King, Tom Jane and Jason Mewes among them) are most definitely not in the Just Say No camp, with illicit substances ingested in abundance. Of course, the guy in the Ronnie mask soon makes it quite clear he has a zero tolerance policy...
