10 People Brave Enough To Accept Their Razzie Awards

6. Paul Verhoeven - Worst Director And Worst Picture For Showgirls

Paul Verhoeven is perhaps one of the more surprising names to appear on a list of Razzie nominations - the Dutch-born director made some of the greatest action movies of the 1980s and beyond, including RoboCop, Total Recall and Starship Troopers. Showgirls was a far cry from his best work, though, a film so bad that even the controversial sex and nudity liberally scattered throughout couldn't prevent it from becoming a flop. That didn't stop Verhoeven from becoming the first person in the history of the Golden Raspberry Awards to collect his trophy in person, where he quipped to laughter from the audience, "When I was making movies in Holland, they were blasted by critics as decadent, perverted and sleazy. Then I moved to the United States." He went on to say with a smile, "I had the worst thing happen to me today. I got seven awards for being the worst, and it was more fun than reading the reviews in September." At least after such an experience the only way from there is back up.
