OToole-Peter-22-600x300 Nomination and Year: Best Actor in a Leading Role: Venus (2007) Best Actor in a Leading Role: My Favourite Year (1983) Best Actor in a Leading Role: The Stunt Man (1981) Best Actor in a Leading Role: The Ruling Class (1973) Best Actor in a Leading Role: Goodbye, Mr Chips (1970) Best Actor in a Leading Role: The Lion in Winter (1969) Best Actor in a Leading Role: Becket (1965) Best Actor in a Leading Role: Lawrence of Arabia (1963) Though Peter O€™Toole will forever be remembered for his mesmerising performance in Lawrence of Arabia, he is a truly esteemed thespian of the highest calibre. O€™Toole is a revered graduate from the Shakespearian school of acting and has enjoyed a long and illustrious career on stage as well as on the silver screen. O€™Toole has made Oscar history for receiving the most acting nominations without a win, with an astonishing 8 nominations (his acting associate and good friend Richard Burton is a close second place with 7). In 2003 he received an honorary award for being an actor €˜whose remarkable talents have provided cinema history with some of its most memorable characters€™. However he very nearly turned down the award €“ O€™Toole didn€™t want a consolation prize, he wanted the real deal. In 2007 he did receive another nomination for Venus, but a sense of ill-fated deja-vu struck again as he lost out to Forest Whitaker€™s performance in The Last King of Scotland. Always gracious in defeat, O€™Toole jokingly remarked, €˜always the bridesmaid, never the bride, my foot€™ as he accepted his honorary award.
