4. Unsatisfying Fates - War For The Planet Of The Apes (2017)
War for the Planet of the Apes is, like its brilliant two predecessors, one of the finest blockbusters of the 21st century, but even so it's not a flawless vision.
Following the ape Caesar (Andy Serkis) as he leads his people against a tyrannical force of human soldiers led by the uncompromising Colonel (Woody Harrelson), the threequel is epic and deeply affecting, but has two particular death scenes that feel oddly muted and avoidable.
For one thing, The Colonel is unceremoniously dispatched by the deadly Simian Flu during the final battle, never having the one-on-one confrontation with Caesar the film was teasing. And then there's Red (Ty Olsson), a lowland gorilla slave who saves Caesar's life and takes a bullet to the head without defending himself.
It may seem petty to criticise, but these deaths feel far too anti-climatic and (in Red's case) unnecessary. The deserved so much more.
