1. Zoe Saldana As Nina Simone - Nina

When one takes a gander at 2016's Nina - a biopic allegedly dedicated to legendary musician Nina Simone - it is not hard to see why Zoe Saldana's performance elicited this response from the iconic performer's estate. Rather, it is legitimately difficult to decide what is most offensive about the universally derided film.

Is it the film's array of cosmetics, that included some truly horrifying prosthetics and dark makeup? Avatar superstar Saldana, the actress tasked with bringing this nightmarish version of Simone to life, is Afro-Latina rather than African-American and looks nothing like Simone. It's such a thoroughly uncomfortable state of affairs that racial justice advocates have gotten involved in the debate.

Could it be the inexplicably rancid choice to portray Simone - a woman who dealt with bipolar disorder, alcoholism and spousal abuse - as a seedy, hedonistic figure, totally unconcerned with throwing away a seminal musical career in a haze of smoke and booze? No wonder that Simone's estate decried proceedings as "gut-wrenching" and "soul crushing"; this must have constituted a truly painful watch for the artist's legions of fans, let alone anyone personally associated with the High Priestess of Soul.

Saldana may have subsequently apologized and distanced herself from the film, but the damage has been done for those unfortunate enough to witness it.
