In recent years, some have questioned Julia Roberts's status as one of the top stars in Hollywood, bandying terms like "overrated" and "grating" around, but she gave the naysayers something to think about with a captivating performance in Wonder.

Stephen Chbosky's inspirational story of triumph over adversity is packed with more depth and emotion than its Hallmark Channel-worthy premise suggests, and Roberts brought star quality to it in the role of protagonist Auggie Pullman's mother.

Roberts and Owen Wilson might sound like a comically mismatched couple on paper, but the chemistry between them throughout Wonder is palpable and the mother's relationship with her facially-disfigured son rings true at every turn.

Nobody shifts from tough-as-nails badass to caring maternal figure as effortlessly as Roberts, and that's exactly what her role in Wonder called for.
