10 Perplexing Sci-Fi Film Problems Solved By The Internet

8. What's The History Of The Godzilla Species?

So this one might be a little confusing. Godzilla, King Of The Monsters has a few different origin stories, owing to his appearances in Japanese and American movies - one of the latter which we do not speak of - and so it's hard to get a "definitive" handle on the big scaly dude's back story. We're not the only ones confused, and thankfully the internet has provided not only the closest to a unified theory of Godzilla's history, but also a detailed treatise on his species as a whole and how it's related taxonomically to the rest of life on Earth. Yeah, it's pretty awesome. And incredibly nerdy. With the help of legit marine biologist Dr Craig R McClain Reddit managed to come up with an in-depth natural history of the Godzilla species, positing they originated during a time in Earth's history when surface levels of radiation were drastically higher than they are now - so, like, the geologic era, approximately 250 million years ago, before dinosaurs showed up. As time went by the population waxed and waned, eventually whittling them down to the one, singular Godzilla we all love and fear today. The whole read's pretty bonkers and fun, so you should probably check it out.
