10 Planned Comic Book Movie Sequels (And What Happened)
1. Spider-Man 4
The Planned Sequel
And not only 4, but 5 and 6 too. Sony greenlit 3 more Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies, even after the middling critical response to Spider-Man 3. It was instead the incredible box office results that convinced Sony to extend the franchise.
There were plans for The Lizard, Vulture, and more to be featured in the upcoming films, and without a doubt Gwen Stacey would have made an appearance to heighten the romantic tension between Peter and Mary Jane.
Truly the greatest loss of these films, though, was JK Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson and Rosemary Harris as Aunt May. Nobody has yet topped these legendary portrayals of the characters.
What Happened?
But even as work progressed on the 4th film, it suffered delay after delay, and Sony became impatient. With Iron Man and more of the Marvel characters showing that superhero films were the new hot trend, Sony wanted films soon, and The Dark Knight proved that audiences enjoyed a less light-hearted tone than Raimi was known for.
Eventually, Raimi left the projects and Sony decided to reboot the character with the Amazing Spider-Man films - something they had been considering doing even as he was formulating his plan to make Spider-Man 4.
It was a huge letdown that Raimi would never get a chance to redeem the missteps made by Spider-Man 3, but after Tom Holland donned the suit, it’s hard to want to go back - and with Avengers 4 and Spider-Man: Far From Home on the horizon, we’ve still got plenty of great stuff with the webslinger to come.
