The Planned Sequel

Guillermo Del Toro has become a legendary name in modern fantasy cinema. Along with making one of the most critically adored movies of all time with Pan’s Labyrinth, he’s also made Blade II, Pacific Rim, Crimson Peak and Best Picture winner The Shape of Water.

Almost everything he touches seems to turn to gold, and the same went for his Hellboy films. Both movies were loved by fans and critics alike, and you really can’t get better casting for Hellboy than Ron Perlman.

After The Golden Army was a success, plans for a third film moved ahead. Bringing back the iconic Perlman and his supporting cast, the film was set to end the trilogy and wrap up any and all loose ends. It could have been a rare thing in comic book movies - a finale that feels natural, complete, and doesn't necessitate any more sequels.

What Happened?

But Del Toro was instead pulled towards making The Hobbit films. After working on them for nearly two years, he was suddenly kicked off for no clear reason. This was the perfect chance for him to finish his Hellboy trilogy, but unfortunately, producers weren’t interested, and Del Toro couldn’t find someone to finance the last film.

But if you still want your Hellboy fix, this year Lionsgate confirmed they’re rebooting the franchise with Stranger Things’ David Harbour as Hellboy and director Neil Marshall at the helm. Here’s hoping it lives up to Del Toro’s high standards.
