10 Pointless Characters In Horror Movie Sequels
7. Jonathan Clemens - Alien 3
One of cinema's great tragedies, Alien 3 was beset with problems almost from the word go. The beleaguered production went through numerous scripts before finally settling on the one penned by Vincent Ward.
After beginning pre-production with Ward's script in mind, the producers decided to scrap it, despite many sets having already been constructed. This baffling decision was to change up the location, from a wooden planet of monks to an industrial prison planet populated by convicts.
In doing this, the producers inadvertently created one of Alien 3's biggest issues: every character looks and sounds the same. They're all bald, English and speak with the same cockney accent.
However, one character stands out from the rest: that of Dr Jonathan Clemens, the prison's resident medical expert. Clemens is easily the most interesting character in the movie outside of Ripley. It's a shame then that his inclusion is entirely wasted.
Instead of playing a vital role in both the development of Ripley as a character and the final act of the movie, he is killed off before we really get to know him.
The under-utilization of Clemens is just one of the many mistakes made by Alien 3.
