10 Pointless Characters In Horror Movie Sequels

8. The Crooked Man - The Conjuring 2

Alien Covenant James Franco
Warner Bros.

One of the main strengths of The Conjuring series is its set of terrifying demonic villains. From the evil witch Bathsheba to ancient demon Valak, the franchise has a wide set of strong and fear-inducing baddies.

All this makes the inclusion of The Crooked Man in The Conjuring 2 even more disappointing.

His appearance in the movie is teased long before he eventually turns up, with Billy using a zoetrope that bears the mark of The Crooked Man. This tease early in the narrative sets the character up for a strong presence in the final act.

While The Crooked Man does indeed appear in the final act, his appearance is extremely short lived, with him only being present in one scene. This is especially disappointing considering the character has a wealth of backstory to explore.

It could be argued that his appearance in the movie isn't totally needless, as he is seemingly there to set up his own solo movie. While this may be true, his lack of any meaningful impact on the story of The Conjuring 2 makes him an unnecessary inclusion to the narrative - even if he is setting up a solo outing.
