Megatron is Optimus Prime’s main rival in The Transformers universe which includes numerous cartoons and films. The original Transformers cartoon, which debuted in 1984, started a wildly popular franchise after it was only supposed to be a marketing tool to push Hasbro’s Transformer toys. Megatron was a big part of that success.

There have been several different versions of the Decepticon leader. The classic cartoon Megatron voiced by Frank Welker is the measuring stick in which all others are judged. That’s why it may have been asking too much for the live-action version to measure up.

Michael Bay’s Transformers film series received tremendous criticism. Among other objections, redesigns left some popular Transformers unrecognizable including Megatron. He looked and sounded like an undisciplined monster. However, Megatron’s first encounter with Optimus Prime, in ‘Transformers’ (2007), is a goosebump moment for any Transformers fan.
