Oh, Michael Bay. Not simply content to reimagine one beloved animated series as an over-the-top action extravaganza, Bay used his apparent success in the Transformers franchise to leverage a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot.

His efforts were not met with much enthusiasm from fans or critics alike.

Stylistically, the decision to make the Ninja Turtles into giant, muscular reptiles was probably Bay's worst crime. Aside from their coloured masks, there's very little by way of visuals that links these behemoths to the Turtles so many of us grew up with.

The idea behind the franchise is solid, though. Rebooting the Ninja Turtles with modern capabilities was a solid idea, it was simply Bay's execution that was lacking. The Turtles were originally created as a parody of the superheroes of the early 1980s, and the 2014 reboot saw them becoming everything they were intended to spoof.

At its core, though, the franchise has built a solid foundation for a reasonable franchise. Simply hiring a writer a little more sympathetic to the Turtles' roots would go a long way towards righting Bay's wrongs, although the issue of the gargantuan Turtles' appearance would require a creative solution in order to get the franchise back on track.
