With the ending of the 2000s and the impending finale of the Harry Potter series, there was something of a scramble to find the next big franchise - and naturally, studios turned to young adult novels for inspiration.

One of the resulting attempts at a franchise was Percy Jackson & the Olympians, based on Rick Riordan's book series of the same name, starting in 2010 with Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.

While it boasted a number of A-list stars and solid performances from its young leads, The Lightning Thief proved to be a massive disappointment for fans of the books. Mostly due to the insensitive handling of its source material, fans were both upset and confused by the way the first movie in the planned franchise used major plot points from later books as throwaway scenes in The Lightning Thief, calling into question the quality of any planned sequels.

They were right, it turned out. Sea of Monsters was released in 2013, and the underwhelming reception it received effectively killed the franchise's future.

Given the popularity of the source material, it would be a crime not to see Percy Jackson given another chance in Hollywood. A Disney+ series is reportedly in development, but, with no release date yet announced, it could be a long time before fans see the Olympians done any justice.
