The Theory

Now, here's a fan theory so popular and pervasive it even has its own website.

The Pixar Theory suggests that every single Pixar movie resides within the same, single universe, which begins with Brave (set in the Dark Ages), after which humans eventually leave Earth for space (WALL-E), cars end up running the world (Cars), and the monster civilisation of Monsters, Inc. is actually Earth in the far-flung future.

There's a hell of a lot more to it than that, encompassing every Pixar movie to date in fact, so hunker down and give it a read for yourself, because this thing has a ton of fans online.

How It Was Debunked

In late 2015, Pete Docter - director of Monsters, Inc., Up and Inside Out - reluctantly denied the theory when asked about it.

Docter said, "Well, I don’t want to spoil anybody’s fun. I’m flattered that people spend time thinking about this. [But] we really try to create very distinct worlds in each film. So for [those who think the] characters from Monsters [would] show up in The Incredibles is kind of a design…it breaks my head a little bit to be honest."

There you have it. But let's be honest, people love the theory less for its plausibility and more for its uncommon creativity, and it's taken on enough of a life of its own by this point, however, that it's surely not going to die just because, oh, a Pixar director said it wasn't true.
