The Theory

A movie as awash in delicious ambiguity as Blade Runner 2049 was always going to invite its fair share of theories, and perhaps the most intriguing of all was suggested by none other than legendary comic book writer Mark Millar.

Millar floated the idea that replicant K (Ryan Gosling) was nothing more than a false memory implanted in Deckard's (Harrison Ford) mind by his daughter Ana (Carla Juri) in order to reunite them at the end of the film.

Millar also points to the fact that K is last seen expiring in the snow, after which director Denis Villeneuve cuts to Ana creating memories of snow in her incubation pod, apparently implying K is simply another of Ana's fabrications.

This would also seemingly confirm that Deckard is indeed a replicant after all.

How It Was Debunked

Villeneuve was interviewed regarding numerous Blade Runner 2049 fan theories, and when he heard about this one, he promptly shot it down.

He said, "That’s a nice story. It’s interesting. I cannot comment on that. I understand why he came to that conclusion but I like the ambiguity, I will say."

How polite. But given that it would invalidate and reduce much of what fans loved about the movie down to, well, an imaginary figment, it's probably for the best.

Plus, Deckard being explicitly confirmed to be a replicant is just the worst idea ever.
