Known as one of Hollywood's most elusive movie stars, much of Greta Garbo's personal life remains a mystery.

Born in Sweden, Garbo first appeared in European movies during the 1920s. Revered for her screen presence, she soon became one of Hollywood's greatest actresses.

Garbo made 11 movies during the silent film era before transitioning to talkies in the 1930s. She starred in two box-office hits, Mata Hari (1931) and Grand Hotel (1932), but her success would only decline from thereon.

Two-Faced Woman, released in 1941 to poor reviews, would be her last movie. Seemingly tired of Hollywood, and with an ever-declining audience, 36-year-old Garbo quietly retired.

Fans hoped for a comeback, but Garbo spent the last several decades of her life living in a New York City apartment, avoiding the spotlight just as much as she did during her career. She died in 1990 at 84.
