10 Possession Movies You Need To Watch If You Liked The Exorcist

7. Deliver Us From Evil

Said to be based on “a true account” of documented events, Deliver Us From Evil is a 2014 horror film directed by Scott Derrickson and starring Eric Bana and Edgar Ramirez. Much like Fallen (mentioned elsewhere on this list), this offering delves into the life of police sergeant Ralph Sarchie who works in the Bronx. After he is called to a house after a report of a domestic disturbance, Sarchie soon finds himself on the tail of a dark entity that seems to be possessing people and causing them to act in devious, cruel and evil ways. Deliver Us From Evil is a very dark film, heavy on religious themes and undeniably unnerving.

It was in June 2014 that NYPD veteran Ralph Sarchie released his book, Deliver Us From Evil. The non-fiction book detailed Sarchie's experiences on the streets of New York whilst combating crime, though what makes his account eerie and unique is the fact that he believes in the demonic - and attributes some of his encounters during his career to the supernatural realm.

The 118-minute film, released a few years after the book, certainly holds onto a strong, creepy atmosphere throughout and, despite mixed reviews, it seems to have a lot of fans - and is definitely worth a watch.
