A misguided attempt to travel back in time to change the past results in the accidental death of Charles Xavier during the events of X-Men: First Class, when he and Magneto are still close friends. This creates the splintering off of a new present-day timeline, in which Magneto, inspired by his friends sacrifice, forms the X-Men but is unable to prevent the rise of Apocalypse as Xavier did, meaning that this world is ruled by a millenia-old mutant with delusions of godhood. Only one person retains the memory of the way the world should be (in the comics, its another time-lost mutant, Bishop, but the films could make it anybody) and, as in Days Of Future Past, has to persuade the present-day resistance to attempt to restore the past to the way it should be. Its similar enough to the Days Of Future Past storyline that initially it might not be popular to use, but the Age Of Apocalypse storyline is rife with potential for familiar faces to be co-opted as evil versions of themselves: in this world, for example, Beast is a Josef Mengele figure, a genius mad scientist and butcher who experiments on people. If successful, when the timeline is restored, the best of the characters from the alternate present could find themselves displaced into the correct timeline, allowing for evil doppelgangers of beloved X-Men characters.
