Timecrimes is enough to make anyone tell Nacho to shut up and take their money. So far he's had a solid critical track record and the initial reviews on his new film Open Windows are just as positive. Considering what a cerebral director he is, it'd make for an awesome new direction in which to take the wall crawler. Many of the prior directors show similar signs of using thought-provoking or challenging story devices but Vigalondo is the ultimate dark horse candidate. What's wonderful about him is his ability to make films the way he wants to without the pressure of jumping on the fast track to conformity. He may not be the wealthiest or most well known, but any of his fans could tell you that his films easily rank in their top 25 films of all time. Similar to Rian Johnson, he's someone who likes to play with the space time continuum. Not that that's a necessity for the future of Spider-Man but that Vigalondo isn't at all stressing his acceptance into the Hollywood elite. When, and if, that day comes, he could be able to handle it with a grace similar to Alfonso Cuaron (must be something special about Spanish speaking film-makers). Cuaron's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban had such a unique and beautiful approach that many consider it the best in the franchise. There's no reason to think Vigalondo couldn't do the same in his approach to Spider-Man.
