10 Potential Directors For Spider-Man 4

3. Rian Johnson

As far as his roots go, Rian Johnson isn't too far removed from Marc Webb himself. As someone who was given a significantly large project based solely on a quirky little romantic comedy, Webb has done very well with the Spider-Man mythos. Coincidentally, that romantic comedy starred Rian Johnson's buddy Joseph Gordon-Levitt who, if for any reason Andrew Garfield decided he wanted to hang up the webs, would be interesting to see in the role. Johnson is an incredibly talented storyteller and thought-provoking filmmaker. Brick still ranks at the top of many noir lists and Looper was received very well from both audiences and critics alike. What he's displayed is his ability to craft a challenging and stimulating story that is also tied to entertaining action and a solid resolution. Despite beginning as an independent film-maker, Johnson has seemingly never done taken the artsy high road, and this could land him in good stead if ever he wants to make the jump to the big leagues. He respects his audiences intelligence but also answers our questions rather than remain purposefully vague in order to seem "smart". A Spider-Man movie containing those elements could only be a treat. As we know, the Spidey Universe can get a little crazy, so why not let someone familiar with the notions of time travel and similar complexities handle that Universe the peak of it's quirkiness? Because let's face it, by the time we even make it to number 4 we're going to have to be dealing with some out-there story lines to keep the material fresh.
